The Civil Services Examination is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) of India, an autonomous entity established in 1950 under Article 315 of the Constitution of India. Every year, the UPSC conducts examinations for recruitment to the Indian Civil Service, which serve as the backbone of Indian governmental machinery. A highly competitive and challenging area, the Indian Civil Service involves a variety of jobs in different departments such as the IAS, IFS, IPS and other areas. Civil Services Examination Application Details:
Notifications of the Civil Services Examination are published every year in the month of December in the Employment News and other leading newspapers of India. Application Forms along with the information brochure can be obtained from the designated Head Post Offices / Post Offices throughout the country. Candidates are required to send the duly filled in Application Forms with the acknowledgment card to the The Secretary, Union Public Service Commission, Dholpur House, New Delhi-110011. The preliminary written Examination is held in the month of May and the Main Written Examination is held in the month of October/ November.

Civil Services Examination Eligibility Criteria
Candidates having a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent from any recognized University are eligible to apply for the Civil Services Examination. The age of the candidates must be above 21 years and below 30 years on the 1st August of the year in which examination is being held. Candidates must be citizens of India for applying to the IAS and IPS services. For other services, candidates of select foreign origins are eligible. Reservations as per governmental norms are applicable regarding age limits and job vacancies. Candidates must also be physically and mentally fit as per the standards stipulated by the UPSC for the Civil Services Examination.

Civil Services Examination Selection Procedure

The selection procedure for the Indian Civil Services is divided into three stages:
A Preliminary Written Examination for selection of candidates for the Main Examination. UPSC has announced new pattern for The Preliminary Examination. New syllabus will be comprising two papers of 200 Marks each unlike the previous pattern where in Paper1 carries 150 Marks and Paper2 carries 300 Marks. The new pattern is designed to test the general decision taking ability of an individual.

Preliminary Exam Details as per New Syllabus

Paper-1: General Studies (Marks:200 Duration: 2 Hrs)
> Current events of national and international importance.
>  History of India and Indian national movement.
>

Indian and World Geography- physical, social, economic geography of India and the world.

> Indian Polity and governance – constitution, political system, panchayati raj, public policy, Rights issues, etc.
>

Economic and social development – sustainable development, poverty, inclusion, demographics, social sector initiatives etc.

>

General issues on environmental ecology, bio-diversity and climate change-that do not require subject specialization.

> General science.
Paper-2: General Aptitude (Marks:200 Duration: 2 Hrs)
> Comprehension.
>  Interpersonal skills including communication skills.
> Logical reasoning and analytical ability.
> Decision making and problem solving.
> General mental ability.
>  Quantitative Aptitude(Data interpretation , Algebra etc.)
> English Language.
The Main Written Examination (only for candidates who have been short listed through Preliminary exam).
This exam consists of nine papers on Indian languages (300 marks), English (300 marks), Essay (200 marks), General Studies (two papers each of 300 marks) and any two optional subjects chosen by the candidate (each having two papers of 300 marks each).Successful candidates in the Main Examination are required to appear for an Interview, which is the final stage of selection.
Candidates are recruited to various posts on the basis of their ranks obtained in the Civil Services Examination and as per their preferences for various services and posts.
