VALUE OF DISCIPLINE

“Discipline is obedience to rules formed by the society for the good of all”. – Aristotle.
The dictionary defines discipline as training which produces self control or obedience in the form of rules & punishment. Discipline is the basis of the whole universe. The Earth, the sun, the moon, & other planets, all are governed by certain laws to maintain perfect harmony & beauty. Any deviation from set rules will spell an utter disaster in the nature. Similarly , society too has to be regulated by a certain code of conduct. In fact, discipline is important for a civilized existence. A disciplined citizen will not only fight for his rights, but also allow others to exercise their rights.

Discipline can & should be inculcated from a very young age. It is imperative that the value of discipline be stressed & the children are made to realize its importance. Talent & genius alone are not enough for a man to reach great heights in life; discipline too has a great role to play.

The importance of discipline in educational institutions is well recognized. There should be the right blend of discipline & freedom to the students. The urgent need of the hour is that the government must look into the genuine grievances of the students in order to improve the atmosphere in the educational institutions.

Discipline is the lifeline of the army. Military discipline imposes upon members of the armed forces a certain code of conduct. It demands unquestionable loyalty to the country & to the superior officers, a spirit of fellowship & readiness to cope with an emergency. It is the duty of a soldier to obey the orders of his commander without any reluctance.

Importance of discipline cannot be underestimated in sports & games too. A team cannot be victorious if each player plays according to his own whim. The players should act as a single unit & obey their captain to lead their team to victory.

Discipline should be inculcated from the young age, because young minds can be easily moulded. The children & youth who are imparted the moral values & ethics will be a disciplined citizens of our country who can contribute to the development & progress of our nation. Only through discipline, dedication & devotion can the individual & the society as a whole achieve great heights.
